Viva MEXICABA!

“I've always had a global outlook. Working with the most wonderful artisans from all over the world is completely natural for me.” –Christian Louboutin

Holà from Mexico, the birthplace of Christian Louboutin’s newest Treasure Tote, MEXICABA!  Featuring panels of eye-popping handwoven cotton, vivid embroidery and traditional hand-painted beads, MEXICABA is a truly bespoke carry-all. The vibrant tote was created in collaboration with Taller Maya [link], a design brand that works with artisans from the Yucatan Peninsula in the creation of unique pieces with history and great cultural value. Taller Maya’s mission is to preserve authentic craftsmanship and to ensure the long-term economic empowerment of Mayan artisans, a cause dear to Christian Louboutin’s heart.

Redefining luxury with authentic  artisanal pieces that make a difference, Taller Maya is committed to offering purpose built, safe and friendly workshops where artisans can gather - not just to work but also to forge a sense of community. These artisans, predominantly but not exclusively women, gather in small groups in far-flung villages or in larger collectives. Some have inherited traditional skills, others are learning the skills of their grandmothers and their great grandmothers for the very first time.

Through the social enterprises program of Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya, Taller Maya helps create a sustainable and healthy system of production. Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya facilitates material to build the workshops where the artisans work, learn from each other and develop their creativity along with an internal product designer to create unique artisanal pieces. Elder artisans teach new artisans the great secrets of their craft from cross stitch embroidery to weaving. More than 200 artisans from different communities of the Yucatan Peninsula form Taller Maya and are fairly paid for their skilled handwork.

“This has definitely been one of the most important and challenging projects we have been working on as a group since FHMM started, in 2002.

We knew, in advance, that accepting this challenge would require full time dedication from the whole FHMM team to support the artisans of the communities involved, to ensure that not only would they comply with the established time frame, but also deliver the quality product that Christian Louboutin expected. We truly felt honored to work with such great people.”  - Carola Diez, Director of Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya

The eye-catching power of MEXICABA continues inside the bag with an exclusive Loubiskull lining paying tribute to Dia De Los Muertos. These colourful bouncing sugar skulls are one of Christian’s personal favorite touches to the tote, citing his love of Mexican folk art. “I LOVE the lining of the new bag; the Day of the Dead motifs turned into happy ghosts, keeping an eye on your stuff.”

For each MEXICABA sold in Christian Louboutin boutiques, ten percent of profits from the sale will go directly to Taller Maya. However, the impact goes well beyond charity, as every bag also represents earnings for artisans who worked on its creation. Linking the MEXICABA to the first of the Treasure Tote series, the AFRICABA, introduced in Spring/Summer 2016, each bag features a charming poupette bag charm made by the women of La Maison Rose, in Dakar, Senegal [link to Maison Rose blog post].  The global reach of MEXICABA doesn’t end there; each Treasure Tote also features bead work created by Louboutin’s long time loyalists in India. The tote’s leather detailing is the work of Christian Louboutin’s exemplary production team in Italy. Lastly, it wouldn’t be a Louboutin without a touch of Paris! The final, finishing details of each MEXICABA are added in Paris, linking the hands of artisans all around the world.
